Digital drug tracing was likely accelerated because of that notorious case of NHSA fraud in Dongbei. IIRC it was related to DEEJ or some type of TCM product that people managed to swipe 60x through the system.

I’d be curious to know how Chinese therapeutics companies are thinking about geographic expansion. As we’ve discussed, currently western companies are in-licensing Chinese discovered drugs at pace. But perhaps China Inc wants to expand into Europe/US if possible. Thoughts?

hi saul yes, thats increasingly the direction of travel for sure. few chinese companies have the knowledge of how expand abroad but they are increasingly confident, and have the capacity to burn through resources and trial and error! I wrote this up on the biotech perspective here https://open.substack.com/pub/chinahealthpulse/p/biotech-in-china-four-important-truths?r=1ijwi&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false.

More attention, investment, and seriousness in China's health sector can ONLY be to the good. Living here, and witnessing - anecdotally - extended family members experiencing the system for real issues, it is shocking how unprepared China is for what's coming. A leap forward is imperative. The zero-Covid experience needs to have left everyone with this conclusion.

A fascinating account in just how quickly China is changing. I can feel the excitement inside the cascade of words. Ruby, Im wondering how TCM fits into this increasingly digitalised health-care model? Are traditional medicines still prescribed? What happens (ed) to the traditional thoughtful pulse-taking TCM doctor assessing individual symptoms and balance? Just wondering what you observed about the place of TCM in this new, heavily digitalised system. Thanks for sharing all of these observations with us - so much innovation on the ground that we might not have known about without your excellent reportage!

Thanks Debbie, appreciate it! definitely - I'm looking forward to writing about TCM, have lots of thoughts. It's a fascinating space with many paradoxes. China's TCM digital progress is actually very advanced - including AI imaging for tongue colour/diagnostics!!

Look forward to reading more! A couple of decades back, when I lived in Qingdao, a TCM doctor had a machine that analysed pulses and suggested treatment protocols. It was a long time back, so probably just at the very beginning of TCM and the digital diagnosis. It's hard for people who haven't lived in China to imagine just how technologically advanced it is - and your post has done a lot to describe that. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds. 🙏
